KOCH MEMBRANE SYSTEMS KONCENTRATOR
Koch Membrane Systems asked Robert DeFelice & Associates (RDA) to create sleek styling for its new Koncentrator oil and water separation system based on Koch's membrane filtration technology. Koch was aware of RDA's successful design and engineering solutions with other manufacturers of membrane filtration products including Millipore and Amicon.
Koncentrator sits on a 50-gallon drum containing oily water which is pumped through membranes that separate the oil and water resulting in oil in another barrel and water in a separate container. Koch also asked RDA to design the system for easy portability onto and off the 50-gallon drum.
Our handsome enclosure included smooth curves carefully integrated with ergonomically located operator door for accessing and changing filtration cartridges. Pressure forming was selected to manufacture the cover to reduce tooling, accelerate manufacturing schedule and benefit from pressure forming's ability to easily mold large shapes. We created a sleek, cast aluminum base that included handle openings for easy portability. The enclosure was fastened to the base with COTS screws.
We provided an industrial design package of handsome styling, mechanical engineering of the molded plastic cover, cast aluminum base, packaging of the internal components, all DFMA documentation, COTS components and vendor recommendations.
Koch Membrane Systems asked Robert DeFelice & Associates (RDA) to help increase the sales appeal of its 4-inch diameter, 36-inch long, hollow fiber cartridge used in industrial filtration systems. Koch's original cartridge was commercial-grade, grey PVC pipe with COTS stainless steel piping fittings on each end. Koch was aware of RDA's successful design and engineering solutions with other manufacturers of membrane filtration products including Millipore and Amicon.
Our handsome solution was black extruded PVC tube with shallow, evenly-spaced grooves parallel to its axis and around its diameter. Our sleek design was highlighted with "Koch" in gold lettering on the surface which provided instant high visibility and extra sales appeal. Injection molded end caps, with thin ribs that related to the styling of the grooves in the tube, plus integral, threaded fittings closed each end.
"You did a great job. I didn't believe it was possible to make our big cartridges look so attractive. Our sales went up about 30%," said Koch's VP R&D.
